Taking the 'King' Out of Software Development
New, Faster Collaborative Method to Be Discussed at Sept. 20 Technology Breakfast

Sept. 11, 2007 :: No. 31

A new way of developing software that takes the lead developer out of the role of “king of the project” and makes development a collaborative effort at all levels will be discussed at the Technology Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Fullerton Marriott at California State University.

“Software is something you can’t see. Software developers will say, ‘I’ll be done next week,’ but you can’t see anything. Then the next week, they might say, ‘I need two more weeks,’ but you still can’t see anything, can’t track it, can’t help with it. And checking and testing can’t be started until the lead developer turns it over,” said Dorota Huizinga, associate dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) at Cal State Fullerton and co-author of the book “Automated Defect Prevention: Best Practices in Software Management,” published this month by John Wiley and Sons Publishers Inc. on Sept. 7.

Huizinga and co-author Adam Kolawa, chief executive officer of Parasoft, will be the featured speakers at the breakfast. The title of their address is “The Hidden Advantage: Automated Infrastructure in Software Development.”

In their book, Huizinga and Kolawa explain that the new technique is meant to take advantage of the ingenuity of the human mind while helping with its limits.

The Technology Breakfast is one of a series of events sponsored by ECS for Engineering and Computer Science Affiliates. The public is invited, but seating is limited. For reservations, call Robin Rawal at (714) 278-3362 or e-mail Rawal at rrawal@fullerton.edu by noon Sept. 17.

Tickets are $10 for non-members, free for Affiliates. Registration starts at 7 a.m. The program and breakfast are from 7:30 to 9 a.m.

The Fullerton Marriott at California State University is located at 2701 E. Nutwood Ave., Fullerton, just off the Orange Freeway (57). Parking is free.
