Rare Pottery on Display at Cal State Fullerton
Anthropology Teaching Museum Opens New Exhibit of Sawos People
What:
Cal State Fullerton's Anthropology Teaching Museum is opening a new student-curated exhibit, "Ceramics of Sustenance: Elaborate Vessels of the Sawos, Papua New Guinea," featuring pieces from a Bowers Museum collection.
When:
April 15 – June 2
Opening reception: 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 15
Gallery hours: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Mondays – Fridays
Where:
Cal State Fullerton Anthropology Teaching Museum, McCarthy Hall, Room 424
Who:
Students enrolled in a museum practicum course — under the direction of Julie Perlin Lee, lecturer in anthropology — curated and designed the exhibit. The objects on display have never been researched, said Lee. "The students are in charge of all research and information, design and construction of the gallery, fundraising, catalog design and publication and educational components. The exhibition is the first to focus solely on the ceramic bowls of the Sawos people."
More:
The exhibit showcases the rarely seen pottery originating from the Middle Sepik region. The pottery highlights the nonceremonial yet, highly decorated utilitarian food bowls and explores the iconography, production, trade and social practices associated with the Sawos people.
