C. George Peale, Modern Languages and Literatures, was inducted into Sigma Delta Pi's Order of Don Quijote, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society's highest award. The honor recognizes exceptional and meritorious service in the fields of Hispanic scholarship, the teaching of Spanish, and the promotion of good relations between English-speaking countries and those of Spanish speech.
Fred Zandpour, College of Communications, will be honored by the U.S. Small Business Administration, Santa Ana office, in September with the organization's District Director's Award. The award will be presented Sept. 27 during the local office's Atlas Awards.
Kimo Furumoto, Music, will conduct the Rio Hondo Symphony for its March 1, 2009, performance of “An American Rhapsody.”
Mark Latonero, Communications, was selected for membership to the Los Angeles-based Pacific Council on International Policy. Membership to the organization is awarded to: qualified individuals with a general interest in international affairs; industry leaders whose business influences and is affected by global trends, markets or policy; or individuals who are experts in international affairs.

Thomas N. Clanin, Communications, was named “Journalism Educator of the Year, Four-Year University Division,” by the California Journalism Education Coalition during the April 26 National Writers Workshop held on campus. Cal-JEC is an umbrella group for professional, college and high school journalism organizations. Clanin also conducted a newspaper layout and design workshop April 4 at the USC Annenberg School of Journalism High School Journalism Day.
Paul Lester, Communications, has been elected April 16 to a three-year term on the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication’s Professional Freedom and Responsibility Committee. He will take office Oct. 1.
Pamela A. Jones-Tintle, University Advancement/Athletics, has been selected to co-chair the philanthropy track for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District VII Regional Conference Dec. 6-9 in San Francisco.
Milly Heaton, University Advancement/Arts, will co-chair the Nov. 19 Association of Fundraising Professionals, Orange County chapter, National Philanthropy Day

Robert L. Sage, Communications, was elected Feb. 29 to a one-year term on the board of directors of the California College Media Association. The statewide organization was established to foster cooperation and collaboration among colleges in the state and the west.
In March, Tom Clanin, Communications, was elected to a one-year term as president of the Orange County Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. The Society of Professional Journalists is a national organization dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating standards of ethical behavior. It was founded in 1909 and has approximately 10,000 members.

The documentary video “The Hat Lady,” created by Diane Ambruso, Radio-TV-Film, has been accepted for showing during the March Reel Women International Film Festival in Los Angeles. The video also will be presented as part of the March 24 closing program for the CSUF Scholarship on Gender Conference. The film focuses on a woman who sews hat for cancer victims when they lose their hair to chemotherapy. Joining Ambruso for the film presentation will be Dara Vazin, Health Sciences.
“The Mystics: A 50-Year Legacy,” a documentary by Shelley Jenkins, Radio-TV-Film, will be screened Sunday, March 2, at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. Jenkins also was asked by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Foundation to interview David Jacobs, the creator of the TV series “Dallas,” for its archives.
Cynthia M. King, Communications, and graduate student Jaclyn S. Lelea tied for third place for their paper “Serious, Funny or Horrific? Effects of Film Genre on Perceptions of Violence and Victimization” in the Broadcast Educators Association’s Competitive Papers in Entertainment Theory and Research. The paper will be presented during the BEA Research Symposium 2008: Advances in Entertainment Theory & Research April 17 in Las Vegas.
Hye Kyeung Seung, Human Communication Studies, is a member of the 2008 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Convention Program Committee. She is serving on the section on autism spectrum disorders.
Esiquio Uballe, Dean of Students, was among the honorees recognized by Kindercaminata during the Orange County non-profit organization’s 2007 President Salute Feb. 27 at the Orange County Board of Education.

John W. Bedell, Anthropology/Sociology, was installed Nov. 30
as president of the California County Board of Education. Bedell has
served as a member of the statewide board for four years and previously
held positions as both vice president and president. Previously, he served
as president of the Fullerton School District board.
J. Vincent Buck, emeritus Political Science, was reappointed to the Fullerton Library Board of Trustees.

Grady D. Bruce, emeritus Marketing, was appointed in August
to a two-year term on the editorial advisory board for International
Journal of Management and Marketing Research.

From Dance, Robin Johnson’s choreography “Lalique
Nocturn” has been selected as a Division II finalist at the 10th
Annual Dance Under the Stars Choreography Festival Nov. 11 at the McCallum
Theatre in Palm Desert. The performance will be performed by dance students
Joshua Romero and Erica Santucci. Another work, “I Promise” by
dance majors Crystal Barrientos and Brad Beakes, first performed at the
2007 Spring Dance Theatre, also was chosen for the competition.
B.J. Snell, Nursing, was a coordinator and presenter at the 22nd Annual Ambulatory OB/GYN Nursing Conference Sept. 19-22 in Las Vegas.

Mortaza Jamshidian, Mathematics, was appointed an associate editor
of the Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation.
Jay Bond, Facilities Management, was elected to the Association of University Architects Board of Directors in June. He will serve as board secretary for the 2007-08 year.

John Patton, Anthropology, was elected to a two-year term as president
of the Evolutionary Anthropology Society, a section of the American
Anthropological Association.
Tom Clanin, Communications, was elected to a third three-year term on the board of the Society of Professional Journalists, Los Angeles chapter. Clanin is a founding member of the SPJ Orange County satellite chapter and serves as its treasurer.

California County Boards of Education. He has served as a member of
the Orange County Board of Education and been active in the state agency
for almost four years. Previously, he served as president and a member

In March, Raman Unnikrishnan, Engineering and Computer Science, was honored with the 2006 Missouri Honor Award for Distinguished Service in Engineering by the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Alan S. Kaye, English, Comparative Literature and Linguistics, has been appointed to the Board of Editors of Al-‘Arabiyya: Journal of the American Association of Teachers of Arabic.
Jule Selbo, Radio-TV-Film, served a panelist at Script Magazine’s Scriptwriters Showcase April 8 in Los Angeles.
In January, Richard L. Deming, Chemistry and Biochemistry, served as general chair and Robert Belloli, Chemistry and Biochemistry, was program chair, at the 40th Western Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Orange.
