INTRODUCTION

The
Women’s Center was founded in 1972 for the purpose of providing
space, conversation, services and awareness for individuals interested
in exploring the status of women in society.
Today, the staff has expanded; the direction has changed and the
center provides programs, conferences, workshops, counseling, groups,
advocacy and research opportunities for students in the university
community as well as community members.
Internship opportunities are available for those who want to explore
gender issues and contribute to decreasing society’s gender
stereotyping, discrimination and prejudices based on gender or sex.
Both women and men are encouraged to utilize the center and contribute
to its mission to disseminate information on the status of women
and men in society. The center functions to provide a fair set of
programs on gender awareness as well as issues with which women
and men struggle in society. Some of these issues are: poor gender
socialized communication patterns, intimate and domestic violence,
sexual assault, stalking, sexual harassment and simply dysfunctional
and disappointing relationships based on poor communication.
We invite our students to use our study area, attend lunch time
programs, groups and workshops, or to complete an internship with
us.
We have established the following projects to assure our students
a link to the surrounding community as well as an increased awareness
of gender concerns and socialization: CSUF/WSU
Joint Task Force on Domestic Violence; Gender
Alliance Program; Domestic
Violence Prevention Speakers Bureau, half-day conference series
on Domestic Violence and Prevention and Community internships.
The Women’s Center has also established the Women's
Cultural Resource Center to explore the intersection of culture/ethnicity
and gender. The Adult
Reentry Center offers services to the returning student who
may re-enter the university community with a complex set of circumstances.
