AFRICAN AMERICAN RESOURCE CENTER

African American Women’s Resource Center fosters an environment supportive of African American Women and the issues of concern confronting them.

The center provides current information on the status of women in the African-American community through their collection of books, magazines and research reflecting the African American culture. They also provide information and support through participation in Sistertalk, a weekly discussion group.

History

Through the years The African American Women’s Resource Center has evolved into a dedicated and visionary network of women. In 1989 a discussion group for Black women was formed by Pamela Lewis, a Communications major and volunteer in the Women’s Center. As the discussion group evolved so has the name of the group: Black Women’s Forum, 1993, African American Group and, in 1994, Sistertalk.

SisterTalk

This discussion group encourages solution-oriented empowerment dialogues, provides a forum in which every woman can voice her concerns about the impact of culture and ethnicity in various issues affecting her relationships with others and in her professional life. Sistertalk is recognized as a campus club that hosts events based on culture and gender issues. Sistertalk sponsors several high profile events during the year. The Annual Woman and Man Dialogue; Sistertalk Luncheon; Gospel Fest.

The groups will cover various topics, and social issues that affect the African-American woman:

	Culture		Relationships		Discrimination
	Family		Education		Gender Issues
	Health Issues		Goal Setting		Marriage
	Campus and Community Resources		Scholarship		Mentoring

Through this group, many young African American women have made life-long friendships, found the support they needed during their college years and have also built a strong web of networks that has been beneficial in reaching their career goals.

This group meets every Wednesday from 5 to 6 pm in UH205.
